This is a grant funded, temporary part-time 20 hrs/wk position without benefits. There are two positions available. Continued employment is contingent on sufficient future funding. The assignment may last up to 40 weeks. Grant Description: Funded through the U.S. Department of Education FIPSE Innovative Strategies for Community Colleges for Working Adults and Displaced Workers, the grant is to provide an innovative program of remediation and learning community services for displaced, underemployed, and incumbent workers in Advanced Manufacturing/Integrated Technology Systems. This program would provide skills placement in mathematics and reading, along with customized remediation for participants in order for them to successfully enter and complete the program in a ten week program. A learning community will be formed to facilitate skills development in the remediation portion of the program and during the actual training. Manufacturing is a growing industry in the Pittsburgh region, accounting for nearly 10% of all jobs. This program would provide participants with the skills to serve as industrial maintenance technicians with certificates in mechatronics, servicing electrical, electronic, and mechanical instrumentations in the manufacturing industry. The program will graduate 24 students, in two cohorts, each year of the three year grant. CCAC will partner with regional employers, The Pittsburgh Hispanic Center, and the CCAC Career Transitions Center for this project. Job Duties: 1. Operate PLATO software in the initial assessment of the students' academic performance level in reading, English, and mathematics. 2. Identify self-paced PLATO prescriptive lessons and customized learning modules for students that address student deficiencies in reading, writing, and math. 3. Make sure a clean and safe learning experience in the AM/IST lab is maintained. 4. Maintain adequate supplies, materials and inventory in the AM/IST lab in consultation with Instructors. 5. Encourage and motivate all students to stay focused on the PLATO lessons to become ready for the career of their choice, or an apprenticeship entrance test. 6. Establish and maintain pre- and post records of participants' progress. 7. Monitor students' academic progress through the PLATO courseware. 8. Provide data for periodic reports of student progress to the CCAC Project Director. 9. Identify technical problems and contact PLATO Learning Systems or site technician for problem resolution. 10. Meet CCAC administrators and Project Director to discuss issues related to student progress, scheduling and classroom management. 11. Assist Project Director and administrators in marketing the program. 12. Evaluate the program outcomes and assist the Project Director in preparing quarterly reports for the Department of Labor. 13. Perform other related duties as required or assigned. General Summary:
The Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) Instructional Facilitator is responsible for overseeing the remediation process using PLATO software to assist students in upgrading their math, reading, and writing skills to prepare them for entry into FIPSE grant training program. Helps maintain supplies and inventory in the Advanced Manufacturing/Integrated Systems Technology (AM/IST) lab. Job Specifications: Associate's degree and experience in training adults; strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and problem solving skills; proficiency in the use of technology to monitor and improve student achievement; and knowledge of specific learning styles.
