  • Job Summary

    The Product Development Technical Manager will lead the product and ingredient innovation and development to deliver new and novel products and materials, as well as improvements to existing products that create shareholder value. Responsible for managing and optimizing technical processes from innovation through the product lifecycle. This position is responsible for planning and implementing assigned projects to meet customer needs and achieve corporate profit margin requirements utilizing market and technical expertise. The individual will support the strategic vision of the department and is expected to actively contribute to the team in order to achieve strategic goals.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide leadership and oversight for the development of product requirements, finished dosage forms and final package designs; Identifies any issues that may delay product or project and recommends appropriate action to be taken
    • Identifies and clarifies customer requirements, establishes target product profiles and verifies product performance
    • Integrates quality by design, design for manufacturing and other FDA recommended philosophies into the product development efforts
    • PRODUCT FORMULATIONS/INGREDIENT DEVELOPMENT – Design formulations, ingredients and process for complex and challenging products and improve existing formulations through reformulation efforts
      • Evaluate and collaborate on appropriate formula, manufacturing and quality control testing changes, including deviations and master change requests from manufacturers in a timely manner
    • PROJECT MANAGEMENT - Responsible for coordination and execution of all product development activities directed toward successful products launch
    • CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT – Research for up to date advanced technologies and actively apply new concepts; Successful recommendations made on new technology and improvements relevant to capacity, efficiency, and performance of the department
    • COMPLIANCE - Preparation and execution of all related technical and business documentation will also be a primary responsibility
    • LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT – Develops and leads staff by providing technical direction and constructive feedback while creating a learning and mentoring environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement and embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation, manages innovation to reality
    • Work cross functionally with Scientific Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Sales & Marketing, Quality, and Technical departments to identify alternatives to such changes where possible with minimal impact to the business

    • Lead discussions with quality control, raw material suppliers, contract manufacturers, analytical laboratories and technical writers
    • Partner with Scientific Affairs in early stage evaluation of raw materials and potential formulation options to determine feasibility and identify solutions to work through challenges to ensure timely shipment
    • Oversee new ingredient quantification and qualification
    • Manage discussions with Quality Control, Raw Material Suppliers, Contract Manufacturers, Analytical Laboratories and Technical Data Writers
    • Ensure necessary testing is being performed on raw materials and/or finished product such as analytical, microbial, allergen, banned substance and stability
    • Manage all aspects as well as participate in product sensory evaluations to drive decisions best for the product and our customers
    • Prepare and facilitate study design based on speed and efficiency necessary to provide feedback to manufacturers
    • Provide critical feedback to manufacturer formulators/ food technologists for next steps
    • Review artwork to ensure accuracy for technical aspects as well as compliance with labelling regulations in collaboration with Compliance Team
    • Manage and supervise technical activities of associate/ assistant technical managers as well as other projects as needed

    • Provide regular updates to cross functional teams (e.g. Marketing, Merchandising, Brand Managers, Scientific Affairs, Quality Control etc.) in a concise format to include status, challenges, issue resolution and ensure success of the programs
    • Proactively communicate concerns regarding product requirements, ingredients, timing, etc. that could jeopardize product launch
    • Maintain accurate records of project history
    • Work closely with Project Managers to ensure projects stay within requested concept, costing and launch timing
    • Optimization and Streamlining Efforts
    • Ensure best practices are used to deliver innovative products that excite the consumer and align with the goals of the projects and cross functional departments
    • Analyze practices, processes and documentation for, but not limited to, sensory evaluation, facts panel creation/review, formulation feasibility analysis, quality control testing and troubleshooting of technical challenges

    • Develop and strengthen internal GNC relationships through collaborative discussions and interactions
    • Assist department in fostering current relationships with manufacturers and raw material suppliers
    • Create and lead technical team in a systematic approach to scout for future opportunities in the areas of food science and dietary supplement manufacturing, new product trends, flavor/sensory trends resulting in new products and improvements to existing products

    • Ability to taste and screen various products and ingredients for flavor and sensory evaluation without dietary limitations
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment in a highly organized fashion.
    • Ability to work independently with little direction and accept a fluid/evolving environment
    • Ability to critically read technical documents/formulations, identify and trouble-shoot challenges, and analyze next steps and timing
    • Ability to interact with technical professionals (scientists, manufacturing), sales and marketing professionals
    • A passion for nutrition is preferred
    • Additional duties as assigned

    Job Specifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Human Physiology, Pharmacology, Medicine, Nutrition or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key accountabilities of the job required
    • Advanced degree (MBA, Master’s, Doctoral) preferred
    • 10+ years hands-on experience in formulation of dietary supplement (DS) and/or pharmaceutical products
    • 3+ years in a leadership/supervisory role
    • Prior managerial/supervisory experience preferred
    • Additional experience with raw materials/ ingredients, quality assurance, and regulatory experience
    • High degree of proficiency MS Office Suite, Outlook & Internet applications
    • Formulating expertise, particularly with nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals
    • Ability to formulate timed-release dosage forms and expertise in specialty coating systems including enteric coating
    • Expertise with formulating dosage forms with complex active ingredient matrices for both human and pet products
    • Researches and formulates new products based upon validated scientific concepts
    • Analyzes new ingredients for compatibility in product formulations
    • Creates product concept presentations and maintains a pipeline of new ingredients and product concepts
    • Produces and revises ingredient/product dossiers
    • Vets new product opportunities to determine safety, efficacy, viability, dosage, regulatory compliance, scientific validation and commercial feasibility
    • Stays current on medical issues by conducting continuous research to include preclinical, clinical, actions, indications, contraindications, dose requirements, etc. linked to health conditions
    • Solid technical writing and math skills
    • Working knowledge of analytical methods and tests including microbiological
    • Working knowledge of laboratory and production-scale manufacturing equipment
    • Relevant computer skills including WP, spreadsheet and database applications, and ability to navigate and use internal computer-based systems
    • Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, presentation, budgeting, project management (from conception to completion), & planning skills
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning)
    • Solid understanding and application of mathematical concepts
    • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as, internal and external clients
    • Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.
